The Southeast Spokane County Community Fair Royalty Committee, Kris Pettibone and Mary Hill, invite the public to attend the Coronation of the 2011 Southeast Spokane County Fair Queen, May 15, 2011 at the McIntosh Grange, 1st Street, Rockford, WA, 6:00 p.m. ($5)
The queen and and her two princesses will be crowned from among eight candidates.
The entrants (and their sponsors) include, Maylissa Lewis, Southeast Spokane County Historical Society; Taylar Fraz, Rockford Womens Club; Leaira Anderson, Rockford Historical Society; Ashley Roecks, Rockford VFW Post 7815; Bianca Thiers, Hangman Creek Chamber of Commerce; Kailyn Gady, Rockford Firebells; Emily Sainsbury, Rockford Lions Club; and Mikayla Cornwall, American Legion Post #165.
The royalty event began more than half a century ago. Kris said, "At last year's coronation we had the privilege to have the very first queen ever picked on hand to see her granddaughter run." Kris did not have the names or dates, but estimated about sixty years between the two coronation events.
In February, the Royalty Committee of the Southeast Spokane County Community Fair organation sends letters to seventeen sponsoring organizations that have been involved for many years.
Girls enrolled in 10th and 11th grades of Freeman and Liberty High Schools are eligible to compete in the royalty contest.
Entry forms are available at the schools, organizations and in the communities. Girls do not need to be asked, or have a sponsoring organization to be eligible. The Royalty Committee will locate a sponsor for any girl wishing to enter the competition.
The young ladies fill out a form on school activities, non-school activities, Awards Involvement in the Southeast Spokane County fair, and write an essay on why they want to be the Southeast Spokane County Fair Queen.
Each sponsoring organization selects a candidate. Candidates are judged on a point system, have a personal interview; in the fun and exciting coronation event each girl is interviewed on stage, all on points. The young lady with the most points wins the title of Queen, and two high-point runners up are her princesses.
