Recycling and Waste Reduction Classes at Palouse and Pullman, Wash., in March

Judi Dunn-Gray, Recycling & Waste Reduction, will be teaching classes on Composting at the Palouse Library in March, and also at the Commercial exhibitors Event in Pullman, on March 16, & 17, 2012. (Check the Palouse Branch Whitman County Library calendar for dates.
"Both Moscow and Whitman County are public entities. The compost classes and information are free. This is an opportunity for residents of two counties to own (at cost) their own compost machine. Once they preorder we will get a price break and only charge what the costs will be. No profit is made on this. It is a public service," Dunn-Gray said.
Moscow Recycling and Whitman County Recycling are pleased to sponsor a sale of the Earth Machine composter, for back yard composting.

This backyard composter will help you to compost most of the organic waste produced in your home. The EPA estimates the average household can divert as much as 650 pounds of organic waste every year! By diverting this material, it helps to keep our solid waste costs as low as possible.

The Earth Machine features a large 80 gallon capacity, is large enough for a family of five, comes with composting instructions and is made from recycled plastic!

The Earth Machine will be sold at cost (approximately $45, or less depending on how many are ordered.) The composter will need to be pre-ordered before March 16, 2012.

To place your order or for more information call: in Latah County, Moscow Recycling at 208-882-0590; in Whitman County, Whitman County Recycling at 509-397-4622.

The date for pick-up for the composters will be Saturday, April 28, 2012, with locations to be determined.

Any questions please feel free to contact Judi Dunn-Gray, Recycling & Waste Reduction,
judi.gray@co.whitman.wa.us. (509) 397-5213.

Cheers for All Firefighters and EMS on the Washington Palouse

Mayor Michael Echanove, Palouse, Wash., proclaimed February 24, 2012 Firefighters and EMS Day in his town. What a great example and reminder to everyone on the Palouse to hold the Firefighters and EMS that serve their areas in high esteem, also.

Firemen and Emergency Medical Service personnel who provide invaluable services to our communities often rely on volunteers. All deserve our congratulations, appreciation, and support. In addition, the following is dedicated especially to their generous and understanding spouses as well.

An Accolade To Spouses

!! Beep Beeeep Beeeeeep!!

"A-Z Emergency Response Crew this is a run.
"A-Z Emergency Response Crew this is a run.
"Please respond to ...."

At any old time under the sun
How oft those words have snatched your mate
From your warm, cozy bed, when it's late.
Or from a holiday dinner so fine,
Leaving family and friends and the meal behind.

Whether anniversary, birthday or just everyday,
Off in a rush, no time for delay.
And you, dear friend, you've let 'em go!
Many say "Thank you!" more than you know.

Although the following list is incomplete, use the information to contact your dedicated men and women to give them your praise and gratitude, too. Please send update information to: newstnpw@air-pipe.com. Some websites need to be updated, and perhaps these emergency services people would welcome a helping hand with it. Offer to help if you can.

2012 Ecology Youth Corps Jobs

2012 Ecology Youth Corps story is at Department of Ecology, State of Washington, Ecology Youth Corps, http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/swfa/eyc/ero.html. For students interested in applying for summer jobs -- sooner is better than later. Now is the time to learn and prepare.

"Dependent upon final Legislative budget outcomes for July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013, the Department of Ecology in the Eastern Regional Office (ERO) is planning to hire crews in multiple locations for the summer of 2012. Only applicants available to work for a full session will be considered for employment. APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 1, 2012 - April 2, 2012."
  • Why do teens want this job? For the pay? The socialization with other friends? The prestige of winning?
  • What makes it better than jobs in retail or fast-food?
  • Hundreds apply, but less than 10% are hired --- how many make the cut to interview status (the middle step) and how are they chosen?
  • Do the 'employers' look for what is considered an overall hard worker or do low-income or troubled teens get preference?
  • Is there a physical requirement? Would it matter if the teen is overweight?
  • What sort of references do successful teens use?
  • How can a teen prepare to be competitive for the job next year?
  • Do the teens like to work in the heat with vests on? Will they reapply for this job next year?
  • Do they get to wear shorts or are pants required due to possible sunburn and bugs?
  • Is this program only in Washington?
  • Do they need a work permit?
  • How do they get to and from work? -- 14 year olds aren't driving yet.

2012 FCCLA Region 10 STAR Event FHS Winners

Brette Schmidlkofer, Lexi Saeger, and Beth Primmer, students af Freeman High School, competed at the 2012 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Region 10 Students Taking Action With Recognition (STAR) Events.

STAR Events are the competitive events that members can participate in to learn leadership, team work, communication and public speaking skills.

Brette Schmidlkofer, a junior, competed in an event called Fashion Design. She developed a clothing line called IZZY by Design. Brette created a portfolio to show her design label, intended market, sketches for 6 clothing line designs.

Her portfolio also detailed how she planned to sell her designs, and discussed her career options. In addition, Brette created 1 piece of her clothing line.

She was judged on her portfolio, presentation using her portfolio and her designed and created garment. She also received a GOLD rating, which means she is going on to Wenatchee for the State STAR Event Competition and Leadership Conference.

Lexi Saeger, a freshman, competed in an event called Recycle Redesign. She called her event "From Recycle to Upcycle." Lexi designed and made a complete outfit using feed bags (dog food for skirt and cat food for top). She then accessorized with pop-tab jewelry.

She created a tri-fold board to showcase a planning process, sketches of her design, cost sheet, etc.

She was judged on her portfolio, sewn outfit and her presentation. She received a GOLD rating, which means she is going on to Wenatchee for the State STAR Event Competition and Leadership Conference.

Beth Primmer, a sophomore, competed in job interview. She created a portfolio with a cover letter, resume, letters of recommendation, career related education, educational enhancement opportunities, special skills, etc.

Beth's event began with time to fill out an application, an interview where she showcased her portfolio and then an exit section where she created a thank you letter. Beth scored a SILVER rating.

FCCLA relies on students to not only compete, but also to evaluate. Each event is evaluated by 3 evaluators (2 students and 1 adult). Students are also utilized as facilitators where they either time or are the clerk for their event. A big thank you to Anna Jackson (9th), Tori Keizer (10th), Hanna Watkins (10th) and Lindsey Nordby (12th) for their help in making the 2012 FCCLA Region 10 STAR Events a huge success!

FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. Leadership development is a primary focus of FCCLA.

Celebrate National Boy Scouts' Birthday Month!

February is National Boy Scouts' Birthday month. Many of our servicemen were in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts when growing up, and often their parents were involved along with them. To celebrate, on February 26, 2012 MarineMoms-Bethesda will host a "Blue and Gold Banquet" themed-luncheon on 4 East, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Marine Moms-Bethesda is a group of caring volunteers supporting the wounded, injured and ill combat troops and their families, all service branches, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

If your Troop, Den, or Pack would like to send cards to be distributed on the day of the luncheon in honor of the birthday to thank older Scouts who have sacrificed so much.

Guidelines for sending cards: Flat-faced cards work best.  Please - no glitter or anything that can fall off of the cards. These can fall into open wounds causing secondary infections.

Mail to:
