Jonathan Sachs' "Somethin' 'bout an Old Farm Truck" Exhibit Opening Reception June 2, 2013

On Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 1 to 3 pm, at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, the opening reception for an exhibit of photography by Jonathan Sachs titled “Somethin’ ‘bout an Old Farm Truck” will be held.

Images are from the collection of Dave Jones’ old trucks in Sprague, Washington and aerial photos of the Palouse.

Jonathan Sacks is a professional photographer and graphic designer from Burlington, Massachusetts who works in a variety of styles and subjects, but leans toward landscapes.

He has recently been doing aerial photography, particularly of farm lands.  He considers the Palouse the most intriguing landscape he has ever flown above and photographed.

During a trip to the Palouse in 2011, he ran across Dave Jones' collection of old trucks in Sprague, Washington.  He fell in love with the old trucks, which temporarily captured his attention, even from the magnificent Palouse.

He contacted Dave Jones and the two decided to work together on a book about the trucks.  The exhibit continues through June 30.

The truck project has morphed a book titled "Dave’s Old Truck Rescue” that was funded through Kickstarter. Copies of the book will be for sale and Jonathan and Dave will sign copies during the opening reception on Sunday, June 2 from 1 to 3 pm.  Photos of Dave’s old trucks as well as posters and magnets will be available for purchase.

Says Jones about his trucks,

"These old trucks, they fed a lot of people. These were agricultural trucks at one time, and hauled a lot of grain, hauled a lot of fertilizer, hauled a lot of hay, hauled a lot of cattle, just hard working old trucks. Just like the farmers who owned them."
Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a non-profit creativity center at 419 N Highway 195 in Uniontown, Washington, in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence.

The three storey facility is fully handicap accessible and has no daily admission fee.  Open hours are Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.  Information:  www.artisanbarn.org or 509-229-3414.

"Mother Squirrel" : A Different Mother's Day Story

I've admired Wayne Scheer's writing for many years, partly because he's one of the most prolific writers I've met, and partly because of the wide variety of prose and poetry he publishes. He has been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes and a Best of the Net.

This month, Wayne's poem, Mother Squirrel, is at Long Story Short.

You can read it at the Long Story All Poetry  page, which features The Angel by Chrys Fey, and many others. You need to continue scrolling down until you come to Mother Squirrel by Wayne Scheer.

May is ALS Month ~~ Stories of Hope and Courage

I met and became friends with writer, Dawn Goldsmith, a few years before her husband, Derroll, was diagnosed with ALS and their lives took a devestating tilt. Since May is ALS month, I'm proud to share Dawn and Derroll's story, and the ALS link to other courageous stories from all across our nation.

We Seek Quality of Life
Dawn G. Oviedo, Florida

"We have a family photo taken when my husband was around age 14. He was the oldest of his siblings – three brothers and two sisters, plus an older half-brother. The photo captures an idyllic moment before a younger brother, Tommy, died of ALS, the half-brother died in a car crash on his way home from Vietnam, the father was also killed in a car crash at the hands of a drunk driver, and before Derrol and his sister were diagnosed with ALS.
In this household, it appears that car crashes and ALS are family things.
We can’t do any more to prevent the ALS, than we can the car crashes. There isn’t even a seatbelt or treatment to help with this disease. We can only seek quality of life.
We are fortunate that it is slow to progress, and my husband can continue to do his job as an accountant. But, we’ve discovered that even a decent employer fights American Disabilities Act regulations, and we have had to find an advocate to help revamp a few elements in the workplace and allow for a flexible work schedule.
Thanks to Ask NAN and the Disability Rights Florida groups, we were able to overcome opposition, and my husband continues to be a contributing member of society. But we see the disease creeping along his arms and legs, up his throat, across his shoulders… impacting his breathing and every aspect of his life.
Our biggest ally, other than The ALS Association is Dr. Boylan at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and the various technicians and companies who maintain his equipment – with humor. We laugh when we can.
Last night I suggested, since researchers seem to be taking their own sweet time, that we should do our own research. I have this theory that we can blast the disease out of him. I suggested we start with a taser…. He wasn’t quite so enthusiastic about the idea. He suggested adding more turmeric and bacon to his diet. And more hugs and kisses. More together time. And, more smiles and laughter. We continue to enjoy our idyll, trying not to dwell on what lies ahead. Power chairs, hospital beds, ventilators, and such are nothing compared to the next stage of ALS that awaits us."
